The most eye-opening civics lesson I ever had was while teaching third grade. The presidential election was heating up and some of the children showed an interest. I decided we would have an election for a class president. We would choose our nominees. They would make a campaign speech and the class would vote.
To simplify the process, candidates were nominated by other class members. We discussed what kinds of characteristics these students should have. We got many nominations and from those, Jamie and Olivia were picked to run for the top spot.
The class had done a great job in their selections. Both candidates were good kids. I thought Jamie might have an advantage because he got lots of parental support. I had never seen Oliviaâ ™s mother. The day arrived when they were to make their speeches. Jamie went first. He had specific ideas about how to make our class a better place. He ended by promising to do his very best. Every one applauded. He sat down and Olivia came to the podium. Her speech was concise. She said, â śIf you will vote for me, I will give you ice cream.â ť She sat down. The class went wild. â śYes! Yes! We want ice cream.â ť
She surely would say more. She did not have to. A discussion followed. How did she plan to pay for the ice cream? She wasnâ ™t sure. Would her parents buy it or would the class pay for it. She didnâ ™t know. The class really didnâ ™t care. All they were thinking about was ice cream. Jamie was forgotten. Olivia won by a land slide.
Every time Barack Obama opens his mouth he offers ice cream, and fifty percent of America reacts like nine year olds. They want ice cream. The other fifty percent know theyâ ™re going to have to feed the cow.
Heck with the ice cream, I want your mom for president!let us see what happens when obama wins (i am afraid he will) and the crack heads start making money=more crack for crack heads and they never do anything. sure it will help those who have bad fortune AND are hard workers but the majority of the poor are those thatsit around and dont want to work. Even if Obama manages to keep half of his promises, we'll still be a thousand times better off than we are now. McCain hasn't come up with a single idea to get this country out of trouble. Obama's economic plan has been praised by economists the world over....Guess what? Under the proper leadership we can get the icecream...This is the richest, most powerful country on earth and at the very least people should have health care and a decent quality of life. When did you lose your hope for a better world???That was good thanksWhere on earth will I find the cash for all the cattle feed I'm going to have to purchase?Good example. ♥sorry but I am above a 3rd grade level and I know enough to know that offering me something without my working for it won't gain me a thing...we have been giving medical care, housing, free handouts already to the point it has ruined our work force just throwing this in in case you weren't aware of this already.yeah the difference though in that story and Obamas is he is offering ice cream for free to some and states who is paying for it. someone else so he is making the promise to take something from one person and give it to someone else. We already have this in our country and its called welfare all I am hearing is I am going to expand how much they get and the number of people who get it, I am going to pay for it by making everyone else pay more.
